Design a Tundra Animal Challenge
Overview:
A creative design challenge where students design an animal suited to survive in the harsh environment of the tundra. Designed for middle and upper years students, this activity encourages students to think critically about adaptation and survival in extreme conditions.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the conditions of the tundra and how animals adapt to survive in such an environment.
- Develop critical thinking skills by designing an animal suited to a specific habitat.
- Practice drawing and labelling skills, and explain adaptations in written form.
How the Activity Works:
Students first read information about the tundra, including details about its extreme cold, limited food sources, and the types of animals that inhabit the region. They then design an animal that could thrive in the tundra, considering factors such as food sources, movement (e.g., navigating through snow), and necessary adaptations like thick fur, camouflage, or the ability to store fat. After designing their animal, students draw it and label its features, providing explanations of how each feature helps the animal survive in the tundra. This activity promotes both creativity and ecological understanding.
