EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

This matching activity focuses on convict punishments during the colonial era, where students cut and paste to match each punishment with its description. Suitable for middle and upper years students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the various punishments used for convicts in early Australian history.
  • Analyse the nature of different forms of punishment and their effects on convicts.
  • Develop matching and critical thinking skills through historical content.

How the Activity Works:

Students are provided with a set of punishment descriptions and a list of punishments, including flogging, chain gang, solitary confinement and treadmill. They cut out the descriptions and the corresponding punishments and match them correctly. This activity encourages students to think critically about the harsh conditions faced by convicts, while helping them develop a deeper understanding of historical penal practices.
