Highlight Features in a Narrative
EASYTEACHING.NET
Overview:
This activity helps students analyse the structure and language elements in a narrative. Designed for year 4 and 5 students.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the key structural elements of a narrative, such as orientation, complication, and resolution.
- Recognise and analyse the use of language features, such as adjectives, exciting verbs, adverbs and time connectives.
- Develop a deeper understanding of how authors create tension and develop a story.
How the Activity Works:
Students read a narrative and then complete a set of tasks to identify various elements within the text. They label the orientation, complication, and resolution of the story. For example, students circle an example of dialogue and highlight language features such as adjectives, verbs and three adverbs. They also identify time connectives (e.g., first, then, next) and show where tension is built in the narrative. This activity encourages students to focus on both the structure and the language of the text to deepen their understanding of narrative writing.
