Magnetic or Not Magnetic: Cut & Paste
Overview:
A cut-and-paste activity where students sort items into two categories: magnetic and non-magnetic. This helps students understand which materials are attracted to magnets. Suitable for middle years students.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify magnetic and non-magnetic materials.
- Develop sorting and classification skills.
- Reinforce understanding of how magnetism works in real-life objects.
How the Activity Works:
Students are provided with a set of pictures or words representing different items (e.g., paperclip, plastic bottle, coin, rubber band). They cut out each item and sort them into two categories: magnetic and non-magnetic. They paste the items into the correct sections of a worksheet that has separate spaces for each category. This activity allows students to apply their knowledge of magnetism, helping them visually distinguish between materials that are attracted to magnets and those that are not. It also encourages critical thinking as they evaluate everyday objects based on their magnetic properties.
