Overview:

Students measure the length and width of given rectangles using a ruler and then calculate their area. They then cut out the rectangles and position them over provided grid squares to check their answers. Designed for students in years 4 and 5.

Learning Objectives:

  • Measure the length and width of rectangles accurately.
  • Calculate the area of rectangles using the correct formula.
  • Check calculations by physically positioning cut-out rectangles over grid squares.

How the Activity Works:

In this activity, students use a ruler to measure the length and width of several rectangles provided on the worksheet. They then calculate the area by multiplying the length by the width. After calculating, they cut out the rectangles and place them on grid squares to check the accuracy of their area calculations. This hands-on approach reinforces the connection between abstract area calculations and real-world measurements.
