Overview:

A cut and paste activity where students arrange modal verbs in order of their strength, from weakest to strongest. Designed for early and middle years students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the different levels of strength in modal verbs.
  • Recognise how modal verbs express varying degrees of certainty, ability, permission, or obligation.
  • Arrange modal verbs according to their strength, improving understanding of their usage in different contexts.

How the Activity Works:

Students are provided with a set of modal verbs, such as can, should, must, may, might, will, and could. They cut out the cards and then arrange them in order from the weakest (indicating the least certainty or obligation) to the strongest (indicating the most certainty or obligation). This hands-on activity helps students visualise the differences between modal verbs, enhancing their understanding of how these words express different levels of possibility, necessity, or permission.
