Overview:

Students create pizzas by adding unlike fractions without provided guidelines. Designed for year 4 and 5 students.

Learning Objectives:

Add fractions with different denominators independently.
Develop problem-solving skills in fraction addition.
Use visual models to represent fraction sums accurately.

How the Activity Works:

Students are given fraction models representing various pizza toppings (e.g., 1/2 mushroom, 1/4 cheese, 1/8 pepperoni) and must cut and paste them to make pizzas. Without pre-set guidelines, students must determine the correct portions for each pizza based on fraction addition. They combine fractions with different denominators, ensuring the sum is accurate and represents the whole. This encourages students to practise fraction addition in a hands-on, creative way.
