Poetic Devices Cut & Paste Match

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

A cut-and-paste activity where students match examples to the correct poetic device. Designed for middle and upper years students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify and understand different poetic devices, such as alliteration, hyperbole, metaphor, onomatopoeia, personification, pun, rhyme, rhythm, and simile.
  • Analyse how poetic devices are used in writing to enhance meaning and imagery.
  • Develop skills in matching literary techniques to examples, reinforcing knowledge of poetic language.

How the Activity Works:

Students are given a set of poetic devices and a list of examples. Students cut out the examples and match them to the correct poetic device. For example, a sentence with repeated consonant sounds would be matched to alliteration. This hands-on activity helps students actively engage with poetic devices and deepen their understanding of how these techniques are used in poetry.
