Poetic Language Devices Worksheet

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

A worksheet focused on understanding and using 9 poetic language devices, designed for middle and upper years students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the definitions of 9 key poetic language devices: alliteration, hyperbole, metaphor, onomatopoeia, personification, pun, rhyme, rhythm and simile.
  • Write original examples of each poetic device to demonstrate understanding.
  • Develop skills in using poetic devices creatively in writing.

How the Activity Works:

Students read a definition of each of the 9 poetic language devices. They then write an example for each device, such as a sentence or phrase using alliteration, hyperbole, metaphor, etc. This worksheet encourages students to engage with each device, enhancing their ability to incorporate them into their own poetry. By practising with each device, students develop a stronger understanding of how poetic language can enhance meaning and imagery in writing.
