Probability Match: Will, Won’t, Might
Overview:
A cut and paste activity designed for early years students, encouraging them to match events with the terms ‘will happen’, ‘won’t happen’, and ‘might happen’ based on their likelihood. This activity introduces young learners to the concept of probability using simple, everyday events.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand and apply the concepts of probability using the terms ‘will happen’, ‘won’t happen’, and ‘might happen’.
- Develop reasoning skills by considering the likelihood of different events.
- Improve critical thinking by categorising events based on their chances of occurring.
How the Activity Works:
Students are provided with a set of event cards that describe various everyday situations, such as "The day after Saturday will be Sunday," "I will speak to friends today," and "You will have a dream tonight." They are also given three categories: ‘will happen’, ‘won’t happen’, and ‘might happen’. Students cut and paste the event cards into the correct category based on their likelihood. For example, “The day after Saturday will be Sunday” fits under ‘will happen’, while “You will have a dream tonight” might be placed under ‘might happen’ since it depends on the individual.
