Reading a Bar Graph: Tuck Shop
Overview:
A data interpretation activity where students analyse a bar graph showing weekly sales data from a tuck shop to answer questions and make predictions. Designed for students in year 3 and year 4.
Learning Objectives:
- Interpret data from a bar graph to answer specific questions.
- Compare data sets to identify trends and differences.
- Make predictions and estimations based on data patterns.
- Develop critical thinking skills by analysing the purpose of data collection.
How the Activity Works:
Students are presented with a bar graph showing weekly sales for items such as ice blocks, chicken nuggets, jelly cups, fruit salad, and strawberry milk. They answer questions about the data, such as identifying the most and least popular items, calculating how many more chocolate milks were sold than strawberry milks, and estimating daily sales for fruit salads and ice blocks. Students are also asked to consider why the tuck shop collected the data, promoting reflection on how data can inform decision-making.
