Reading a Column Graph: Lolly Shop

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

A data interpretation activity where students analyse a column graph showing daily sales data for Fantango’s Lolly Shop to answer questions and create their own. Designed for students in year 3 and year 4.

Learning Objectives:

  • Interpret and extract information from a column graph.
  • Compare data sets and calculate totals and differences.
  • Develop estimation and prediction skills based on data trends.
  • Create their own data-based questions to reinforce understanding.

How the Activity Works:

Students are presented with a column graph showing sales data for various items (e.g., sherbet drops, chocolate bars, bubble gum, gobstoppers) at Fantango’s Lolly Shop. They answer questions about the data, such as calculating how many more gobstoppers were sold than liquorice straps, determining the total number of products sold that day, and estimating bubble gum sales over a week. Students are also challenged to predict if the shop will meet a weekly sales goal for chocolate bars, providing reasoning based on the data. Finally, they write their own question about the graph to ask a peer, promoting critical thinking and data interpretation skills.
