Toy Shop Change, 2 Step, Dollars & Cents
Overview:
Students work out the total cost of purchases and calculate how much change will be received. Prices include dollars and cents (to 5c). Designed for year 4 and 5 students.
Learning Objectives:
- Add up the cost of multiple items to find the total price, including dollars and cents.
- Calculate the correct change from a given amount.
- Develop problem-solving skills and financial literacy.
How the Activity Works:
Students are presented with a series of shopping scenarios where they must calculate the total cost of items, including prices with dollars and cents (to the 5c). After adding the prices of the items, they determine how much change the shopper will receive from a given amount. For example: Peter wants to buy a drum kit and a rocking horse. What is the total cost? How much change will he receive? This activity reinforces addition and subtraction skills, helping students understand money transactions with both whole dollars and cents.
