Highlight Descriptive Writing Techniques
EASYTEACHING.NET
Overview:
Students analyse a descriptive passage by identifying key techniques such as vivid verbs, precise adjectives and sensory details. Designed for students in year 3 and year 4.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify vivid verbs and precise adjectives in a descriptive passage.
- Recognise sensory details and how they enhance descriptive writing.
- Understand the importance of paying attention to detail in writing.
How the Activity Works:
Students read the descriptive passage titled "My Grandad" and follow a series of instructions to highlight specific writing techniques. They circle vivid verbs using green, precise adjectives using blue, and examples of sensory details with different colours for each sense (sight, sound, smell, taste, touch). Students also identify passages of text in which the author has paid attention to detail. This activity helps students understand how these techniques contribute to creating an effective description.
