Removing Emotive Language

This worksheet helps students recognise the use of emotive language in headlines. Designed for year 5 and 6 students.

How the Activity Works:

Students rewrite a variety of headline that include emotive language in order to attract attention or elicit an emotional response. Students must removing the emotive language while keeping the factual meaning intact. For example, the headline "Unbelievable World Cup upset as Spain loses to Australia!" could be rewritten as "Spain loses to Australia in World Cup match.” This activity helps students understand how language influences the tone of a story and develops their ability to use neutral, objective language.
