Overview:

A checklist to help students classify objects as living or non-living based on specific criteria. Suitable for middle years students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Develop critical thinking skills by assessing objects based on characteristics of living and non-living things.
  • Learn to use a guide to determine if an object is living or non-living.
  • Strengthen classification and observation skills.

How the Activity Works:

Students are given a table with a set of questions (e.g., Can it move by itself? Does it breathe air? Does it need food and water?). They choose various objects and answer the questions by ticking or crossing each box based on the characteristics of the object. After completing the checklist, they will classify the object as either living or non-living. This exercise reinforces understanding of what makes something living and helps students apply these concepts to real-world objects.
