Overview:

An activity where students determine whether each arrangement of magnets would attract or repel. A guide is included to support learners as they understand the interaction between magnetic poles. Designed for students in years 3 and 4.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand how magnets interact based on their poles.
  • Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Reinforce knowledge of magnetic attraction and repulsion.

How the Activity Works:

Students are presented with various arrangements of magnets (e.g., north pole to north pole, north pole to south pole, etc.) and must decide whether the magnets will attract or repel. A guide is provided to explain that opposite poles (north and south) attract, while like poles (north to north or south to south) repel. Students will draw arrows or use symbols to indicate whether the magnets in each arrangement will attract or repel. This activity helps students visually understand the basic principles of magnetism and the interactions between magnetic poles, reinforcing the idea of attraction and repulsion in a hands-on way.
