Using Evaluative Language

Overview:
An activity where students add evaluative language to sentences to enhance meaning and explore its impact on the reader. Designed for middle and upper years students.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the role of evaluative language in shaping meaning and tone.
- Practice adding evaluative adjectives, adverbs, and phrases to sentences.
- Analyse the effect of the changes on the reader's perception of the text.
How the Activity Works:
Students are given a set of sentences and asked to add evaluative language to each one. They will then reflect on how their changes affect the meaning and tone of the sentence, considering how the reader’s interpretation might be influenced. Students will explore how their choice of evaluative language impacts the emotional response of the reader, such as making the sentence more vivid, persuasive, or empathetic. This activity encourages students to think critically about language and its effects on communication.
Note:
Evaluative language is language that judges. It can express a positive judgment or a negative judgement. Evaluative language can help make people feel a certain way.
