Reading a Key: Town Map
EASYTEACHING.NET
Overview:
This activity uses a town map and its key to help students practise interpreting map symbols and using the key to answer questions about the map’s features. Designed for students in year 2 and 3.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify map symbols and understand how to use a key.
- Answer questions using information from a map and its key.
- Enhance map-reading and spatial reasoning skills.
How the Activity Works:
Students are given a map of Granville and a key that explains the symbols used on the map, such as those for hospitals, cafés, gas stations, and other landmarks. They will answer questions like:
- "What street is the Hospital on?"
- "How many cafés are there in Granville?"
- "Circle the Gas Station closest to a Café."
By reading the key and carefully examining the map, students will practise extracting relevant information to answer the questions accurately. This activity helps develop their ability to read and understand maps and the symbols used to represent real-world locations.
