Shopping Centre: Use a Compass

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

A worksheet where students use a compass with cardinal points to navigate a shopping centre. They draw the path each person takes using different coloured pencils and record their new locations. Designed for students in year 3.

Learning Objectives:

  • Develop map-reading skills by following directional instructions.
  • Practise using cardinal points (north, south, east, and west) for navigation.
  • Strengthen problem-solving skills by determining final locations based on given movements.

How the Activity Works:

Students are given a grid-based shopping centre map and a set of movement instructions for different people. They use a compass to follow each set of directions, drawing the paths using different coloured pencils. After completing each path, they identify and write the new location, such as a specific shop within the shopping centre. This activity provides a practical and engaging way for students to apply directional language and spatial reasoning skills.
