Topic Sentence Cut & Paste

Overview:

A cut-and-paste activity where students complete each topic sentence and match it to the correct paragraph. Designed for middle and upper primary students.

Learning Objectives:

• Identify the main idea of a paragraph through its topic sentence.
• Develop an understanding of how topic sentences guide readers.
• Practise matching topic sentences to supporting details.

How the Activity Works:

Students read body paragraphs that are missing their topic sentences. After reading each paragraph, students work to identify its main idea. They then choose, complete, and cut out the appropriate topic sentence before gluing it next to its matching paragraph. This activity reinforces the importance of topic sentences in creating well-structured and organised writing.
