Exaggeration: Persuasive Devices
EASYTEACHING.NET
Overview:
This worksheet helps students understand the use of exaggeration as a persuasive language device. Designed for middle and upper years students.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand what exaggeration is and how it is used in persuasive writing.
- Use exaggeration to strengthen persuasive arguments.
- Recognise how exaggeration can influence the reader’s opinion.
How the Activity Works:
Students are presented with sets of different choices, such as "Doughnuts or cupcakes?" Students must use exaggeration to persuade the reader to agree with their preference. For example, instead of simply saying, "Doughnuts are better," students might write, "Doughnuts are the most delicious food in the universe, with the power to make anyone’s day brighter!" This activity encourages students to use over-the-top language to create a sense of urgency, excitement, or importance, making their argument more compelling.
