Persuasive Devices in a Letter

Overview:

An activity where students read a letter and identify the persuasive devices used in the text. Designed for middle and upper years students.

• Recognise persuasive devices such as emotive language, rhetorical questions, repetition, and appeals to authority in a letter.
• Understand how persuasive language influences the reader’s opinion or decision.
• Develop critical reading and analytical skills by identifying persuasive techniques in written communication.

How the Activity Works:

Students read the provided letter and identify various persuasive devices used throughout the text. They identify examples of techniques such as emotive language, rhetorical questions or repetition. After identifying the devices, students will explain how these techniques are used to persuade the reader. This activity encourages deeper understanding of persuasive writing and enhances students’ ability to analyse and use persuasive language effectively.
