Responding to Emotive Language
EASYTEACHING.NET
Overview:
Students identify emotive language in sentences and identify the emotional response it generates. Designed for year 5 and 6 students.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify emotive language in various sentences.
- Understand how emotive language can influence emotional reactions.
- Reflect on how language choices affect the tone and perception of information.
How the Activity Works:
Students are presented with sentences that contain emotive language. They are tasked with highlighting the emotive words or phrases and then reflecting on the emotions the language evokes. For example, in the sentence "There was a cowardly attack on a vulnerable citizen," students would highlight "cowardly" and "vulnerable" as emotive words and write down the emotion they feel, such as anger, sadness, or fear. This activity helps students develop critical thinking skills and become more aware of how language is used to influence perception.
