Overview:
This reading and comprehension activity provides an overview of the First Fleet’s journey, including its departure, stops, arrival in Australia, and early life in the colony. Suitable for middle and upper years students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the key events and significance of the First Fleet’s journey.
  • Develop reading comprehension skills by answering questions based on the text.
  • Analyse the challenges and experiences of the convicts, officers, and settlers in early Australia.

How the Activity Works:

Students read a passage about the First Fleet, covering the topics such as the Fleet's departure from England in 1787, the stops made along the way, and the arrival at Botany Bay and Port Jackson in 1788. After reading the passage, students answer comprehension questions to demonstrate their understanding of the text. These questions focus on the sequence of events, the difficulties encountered during the voyage, and the impact of the First Fleet's arrival on Australia's history. This activity helps students develop both reading and analytical skills while deepening their knowledge of the First Fleet's significance.
