Beat the Teacher Place Value Game

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

A fun and easy to play whole-class game where students compete against the teacher to build the largest number by placing digits in the correct place value columns.

Learning Objectives:

  • Reinforce place value concepts by placing digits in ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands columns.
  • Compare numbers by building and evaluating place value.
  • Develop critical thinking and decision-making skills in a competitive setting.

How the Activity Works:

In each round, students and the teacher draw cards and place the digits in a chosen place value column. The goal is to create the largest possible number by filling the place value chart (using either the sheets provided or a simple table drawn up in students' maths books). After each round, students compare their number to the teacher’s. The game can continue for however many rounds as needed. The student with the highest points at the end wins!
