Show Probability as a Fraction (1)

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

An activity where students calculate the probability of various events using jellybeans in a sack and express their answers as fractions. Designed for year 5 and 6 students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Calculate the probability of events based on different jellybean colours in a sack.
  • Express probability as fractions in their simplest form.
  • Strengthen their understanding of probability and fractions.

How the Activity Works:

Students are shown images of jellybeans in a sack, with different colours or patterns. For each scenario, students calculate the probability of picking a specific jellybean (e.g., "What is the probability of picking out a striped jellybean?"). They write the probability as a fraction, where the denominator represents the total number of jellybeans and the numerator represents the number of the target jellybean. An answer sheet is provided for easy checking and self-assessment. This activity offers a practical and engaging way for students to practise calculating and expressing probabilities as fractions.
