Marbles & Probability (Yr 5,6)

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

A probability activity where students colour marbles in a jar to match given probability statements. Designed for year 5 and 6 students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand and apply probability terms such as likely, unlikely, certain, and impossible.
  • Interpret probability statements and create visual representations.
  • Develop reasoning skills by matching marble colours to probability scenarios.

How the Activity Works:

Students are presented with jars of blank marbles and sets of probability statements, such as "Picking out a striped or blue marble is unlikely" or "Picking out a yellow marble is likely." They colour the marbles to make each statement true, adjusting the number and distribution of each colour to match the likelihood described. This activity provides a practical and engaging way for students to visualise and practise probability concepts through creative problem-solving.
