Overview:

This activity helps students partition decimal numbers into their place value components and represent them visually. Designed for year 4 and 5 students.

Learning Objectives:

Strengthen decimal recognition and place value understanding.

How the Activity Works:

Students are provided with decimal numbers and asked to partition them into their whole number and decimal components. For example, with the number 1.31, students break it down into 1 + 0.3 + 0.01. They also represent the number on visual models, including a number expander and a shaded grid. These visual representation help students understand how the whole number and decimal parts fit together and reinforces their understanding of decimal place value.
