Chance Match Up (Early)

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

A worksheet designed for early years students to match chance statements (will, won’t, might happen) to pictures of marbles in jars, reinforcing understanding of probability.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify and match probability statements with visual representations of events.
  • Develop an understanding of probability concepts such as ‘will happen’, ‘won’t happen’, and ‘might happen’.
  • Enhance reasoning skills by justifying why certain events are more or less likely to happen based on visual data.

How the Activity Works:

Students are given a set of picture cards showing marbles in jars (e.g., blue, red, or green marbles in jars) along with a set of chance statements: "Picking out a blue, red or green marble." They are tasked with cutting out the chance statements and matching them to the pictures based on the likelihood of the event happening. For example, if a jar has only blue marbles, the statement "Picking out a blue marble will happen" would be matched. If the jar has a mix of marbles, the statement "Picking out a red or green marble might happen" would be appropriate. This activity helps students visually connect probability with real-world scenarios.
