Change from Menu, Dollars & Cents (1)

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

Students use a menu with prices in 5-cent increments to add amounts and calculate change. Designed for students in year 4 and year 5.

Learning Objectives:

  • Add prices in 5-cent increments to determine total costs.
  • Calculate the correct payment and change for purchases.
  • Develop problem-solving skills in real-world money scenarios.

How the Activity Works:

Students refer to the menu to complete a range of money-related questions. They add the cost of selected items and determine the total amount. They then calculate the correct change when given a specific payment amount. Example scenarios include: Suzanne orders waffles and a milkshake—how much does her order cost? and Stephen doesn’t want to spend much money—what is the least money he can pay for dinner, a dessert, and a drink? This activity reinforces financial literacy and numeracy skills in a practical and engaging way.
