Counting Like Coins (Aust.)

Overview:

This activity involves counting collections of like Australian coins and calculating the total value for each type of coin. Students will be given a jumble of coins and asked to identify how many of each coin (e.g., 50c, 20c) are present and then calculate the total value for each coin type.

Learning Objectives:

Identify different Australian coins (5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1, $2).
Count the number of coins in a collection.
Calculate the total value for each type of coin.
Develop skills in basic multiplication and addition using money.

How the Activity Works:

Students are presented with a jumble of coins and asked to count how many coins of each type are in the collection (e.g., how many 50c coins?). Students then work out the total value for each coin type (e.g., 4 x 50c = $2).
