Reading a Pictograph: Rewards Day
Overview:
A data interpretation activity where students analyse a pictograph showing a year 3 class's Reward Day choices to answer questions about student preferences. Designed for year 3 and 4 students.
Learning Objectives:
- Interpret and extract information from a pictograph.
- Compare quantities to answer questions accurately.
- Develop critical thinking skills by making inferences based on data.
How the Activity Works:
Students are presented with a pictograph illustrating different Reward Day options (e.g., basketball, touch football, art, soccer, cricket). Each symbol in the graph represents a specific number of students. Students answer questions such as identifying the most popular choice, comparing how many more students chose art than soccer, and suggesting how the teacher could use the data to prepare for Rewards Day. This activity provides a practical and engaging way for students to practise reading and interpreting pictographs while developing analytical skills.
