Representing 4-Digit Numbers (1)

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

Represent 4-digit numbers in different ways by writing them in words, using MAB representations, and completing a number expander. Designed for students in years 3 and 4.

Learning Objectives:

  • Develop a strong understanding of 4-digit numbers and their place value.
  • Practise writing numbers in words and representing them using MABs and number expanders.
  • Strengthen number sense by interpreting different representations of numbers.

How the Activity Works:

Students are given a set of 4-digit numbers and complete three tasks for each: writing the number in words, representing it using MAB blocks, and filling in a number expander to show different ways to partition the number. A final challenge requires students to determine the number represented by given MAB models. This activity reinforces place value concepts and supports flexible thinking about numbers.
