What’s the Number? 4-Digit

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

4-digit numbers have been partitioned. Students add the parts together to determine the original number. Some questions include a missing part, requiring students to identify the missing value. Designed for students in year 4.

Learning Objectives:

  • Develop fluency in adding place value parts to reconstruct whole numbers.
  • Strengthen understanding of place value in 4-digit numbers.
  • Apply problem-solving skills to find missing values in partitioned numbers.

How the Activity Works:

Students are given a series of partitioned 4-digit numbers, such as 3,000 + 400 + 30 + 9 = __, and must add the values to find the complete number. In some problems, one part is missing, and the total is provided. Students use their knowledge of place value to determine the missing part. This activity reinforces number composition and mental calculation strategies.
