EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

An example of a narrative text with highlighted structure, elements and language features. Designed for middle and upper years students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the key elements of a narrative text (e.g., characters, setting, plot).
  • Understand the structure of a narrative (e.g., orientation, complication, resolution).
  • Recognise and analyse language features used in narratives (e.g., descriptive language, dialogue, pacing).

How the Resource Works:

A narrative is annotated to show the different parts of the story, including the orientation (introducing characters and setting), complication (presenting a challenge or problem), and resolution (how the problem is solved). Students also identify specific language features such as descriptive language to create vivid imagery, dialogue to develop character and move the plot forward, and pacing to build suspense or advance the action. This display helps students understand how narratives are constructed and how language shapes the reader’s experience.
