Working with Contractions

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

An activity focused on working with contractions, including writing contractions, expanding them back into their full forms, and correcting apostrophe mistakes. Suitable for early and middle years students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognise and form contractions from common word pairs.
  • Expand contractions back into their full forms.
  • Identify and correct apostrophe errors in sentences.

How the Activity Works:

Students complete three tasks:

  1. Write the contraction for each given phrase (e.g., "do not" becomes "don't").
  2. Write the expanded form of each given contraction (e.g., "can't" becomes "cannot").
  3. Circle and correct any apostrophe mistakes in provided sentences, then rewrite the sentences correctly. This activity helps students practise forming contractions, expanding them, and ensuring proper punctuation use in contractions.
