Figurative Language
Figurative language is the use of language to convey meaning which differs from the literal meaning of the words. This collection of figurative language worksheets includes the poetic devices of onomatopoeia, similes, metaphors, alliteration, personification and hyperbole. These figurative language worksheets give students practice working with similes, metaphors, personification, hyperbole, and onomatopoeia across a range of short tasks.
Students sort and classify examples, complete sentences, and write their own. Some activities are tightly structured, others leave more room for students to come up with their own ideas, which helps you see who understands the concept and who is just guessing.
There are also focused sets for each type of figurative language, so you can teach one at a time or revisit specific areas when needed. Tasks like matching, rewriting, and short writing pieces keep the focus on how the language works in a sentence.
