Overview:

This activity helps students break decimals into parts, represent them using visual models, and convert them to fractions. Designed for year 4 and 5 students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Partition decimals into tenths and hundredths.
  • Convert decimals to fractions and represent them visually.
  • Develop a deeper understanding of the relationship between decimals and fractions.

How the Activity Works:

In this activity, students are given a series of decimal numbers and asked to break them down into tenths and hundredths. They then represent the decimals on visual models, such as number expanders or fraction bars, and convert the decimal into its corresponding fraction. For example, the decimal 0.15 can be partitioned as 1/10 and 5/100. Students shade the visual model to match the decimal and write the equivalent fraction (15/100). This activity strengthens students' understanding of how decimals and fractions relate to each other.
