Overview:

This activity helps students partition decimal numbers into their place value components (to tenths) and represent them visually. Designed for year 4 and 5 students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand and demonstrate the place value of decimal numbers, focusing on tenths.
  • Break down decimals into their whole number and tenths components.
  • Represent decimals visually using models like number expanders and grids.
  • Strengthen decimal recognition and place value understanding.

How the Activity Works:

Students are given a decimal number and asked to partition it into its whole number and tenths components. For example, with the number 2.6, students break it down into 2 + 0.6. They then represent each part of the number on visual models, including a number expander and a shaded grid, with the tenths section coloured accordingly. This visualisation helps students to understand how the whole number and decimal parts fit together, reinforcing their understanding of decimal place value.
