What’s Your Name Worth? (to 10c)
EASYTEACHING.NET
Overview:
Students calculate the value of names using a letter value chart, with prices in increments of 10 cents. Designed for students in year 3 and year 4.
Learning Objectives:
- Assign values to letters and calculate the total cost of a name.
- Use the letter value chart to work out the value of names, including their own and a friend's.
- Develop addition skills and understanding of basic money concepts.
How the Activity Works:
Using the letter value chart, students assign a monetary value to each letter in their name and a friend's name. For example: J = 30c, W = 80c. They then add up the values of the letters to calculate the total cost of each name. Afterward, students can represent the total amount with coins to practise recognising values. This activity combines literacy and numeracy skills while introducing students to simple money transactions.
