What’s Your Name Worth? (to 50c)
EASYTEACHING.NET
Overview:
Students calculate the value of names based on a letter value chart, with prices in increments of 50 cents. Designed for students in year 2 and year 3.
Learning Objectives:
- Assign values to letters and calculate the total cost of a name.
- Use the letter value chart to work out the value of names, including their own and a friend's.
- Practise representing values with coins and notes.
How the Activity Works:
Using the letter value chart, students assign a monetary value to each letter in their name and a friend's name. For example: A = 50c, I = $1.50. They then add up the values of the letters to calculate the total cost of each name. Afterward, students draw the corresponding coins and notes that could be used to pay for the total amount. This activity reinforces basic addition skills, introduces students to letter-based values, and helps develop money-handling skills.
