Counting Back Change Cards

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

A set of counting back change cards to help students practise the ‘count back’ strategy when calculating change. Designed for middle and upper primary students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Use the ‘count back’ method to calculate change accurately.
  • Develop confidence in handling money and making transactions.
  • Practise mental addition and subtraction skills in real-world scenarios.

How the Activity Works:

Students take turns acting as the cashier and customer. The cashier uses the item price and the amount tendered to determine the correct change. As they hand over each coin, they count aloud from the item price up to the amount given. Students can use coin strips and play money to support their calculations. After each transaction, they count the total change to ensure accuracy. This hands-on activity reinforces financial literacy and numeracy skills in an interactive and engaging way.
