Combination of Strategies (1)

Overview:
An activity designed to help students review and apply various mental strategies for addition and subtraction, including doubles, near doubles, rainbow facts, near rainbow facts, bridge to 10, and count on/count back. Students colour code the strategies used to solve the sums. Designed for students in years 3 and 4.
Learning Objectives:
- Review and apply different mental strategies for addition and subtraction.
- Develop the ability to identify and select appropriate strategies for solving problems.
- Strengthen mental arithmetic skills and number sense.
How the Activity Works:
Students are presented with a series of addition and subtraction sums. They colour code the circles to indicate which strategy they used to solve each sum: green for doubles, red for rainbow facts, and other colours for the respective strategies. This activity encourages students to recognise and visually organise their approach to problem-solving, helping to reinforce the use of mental strategies while increasing their speed and accuracy in addition and subtraction.
