Overview:

An activity designed to help students review and apply various mental strategies for addition and subtraction, including doubles, near doubles, rainbow facts, near rainbow facts, bridge to 10, and count on/count back. Designed for students in year 3 and year 4.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review and apply different mental strategies for addition and subtraction.
  • Develop flexibility in using multiple strategies to solve problems.
  • Strengthen mental calculation skills and number sense.

How the Activity Works:

Students are presented with a set of addition and subtraction sums. They draw lines to match each sum with the strategy they used to solve it, such as doubles, near doubles, rainbow facts, or others. Students are also encouraged to reflect on whether there are sums they could have solved using multiple strategies and explain which ones. This activity helps students deepen their understanding of mental strategies and strengthens their ability to choose the most efficient approach for different problems.
