Overview:

An exploration activity where students investigate the properties of odd and even numbers in subtraction. Designed for years 4 and 5 students.

Learning Objectives:

Recognise patterns when subtracting odd and even numbers.
Explain why certain differences result in even or odd numbers.
Use visual models to support reasoning.

How the Activity Works:

Students solve subtraction problems involving odd and even numbers and identify patterns in the results. They answer questions such as, What happens when an even number is subtracted from an even number? and What happens when an odd number is subtracted from an odd number? To deepen understanding, students draw visual representations, such as dot groups or number lines, to explain why these patterns occur.
