Representing Multiplication (1)

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

A worksheet designed to help students represent multiplication sums using arrays and repeated addition. Students will visually break down multiplication problems to deepen their understanding of the concept. Designed for middle years students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Develop an understanding of multiplication through arrays and repeated addition.
  • Practise drawing arrays to visually represent multiplication.
  • Write multiplication problems as repeated addition and solve for the total.

How the Activity Works:

Students are given a multiplication equation, such as 4x8, and are asked to represent it in two ways: by drawing an array and by writing it as repeated addition. For example, for 4x8, students would draw an array of 4 rows with 8 shapes in each row, and then write it as: 8 + 8 + 8 + 8 = 32. Finally, they would write the multiplication sum: 4 x 8 = 32. This activity helps students connect different representations of multiplication, reinforcing both visual and conceptual understanding.
