Events: Will, Won’t, Might Happen
Overview:
A probability activity designed for early years students, where they use the terms ‘will happen’, ‘won’t happen’, and ‘might happen’ to describe the likelihood of various events.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand and apply probability concepts by describing events using terms such as ‘will happen’, ‘won’t happen’, and ‘might happen’.
- Develop reasoning skills to explain the likelihood of events occurring.
- Use real-world examples to better understand how probability works.
How the Activity Works:
Students are given two scenarios: "The sun will come up tomorrow" and "A dinosaur will come to school." They are asked to explain the chance of each event happening using the probability terms: ‘will happen’, ‘won’t happen’, or ‘might happen’. Students will also provide reasoning for their answers, helping them to think critically about what makes an event certain, impossible, or uncertain. For example, the sun will come up tomorrow because it has done so every day, whereas a dinosaur coming to school won’t happen because dinosaurs are extinct.
