Summit Sub-Zero – A Board Game
Overview:
A fun and engaging board game where students practise adding and subtracting negative numbers as they race to the top of a snowy mountain. The game offers two versions: an easier version with simpler equations and a harder version with more challenging problems, allowing for differentiation. Designed for students in year 5 and year 6.
Learning Objectives:
- Apply addition and subtraction of negative numbers in a game setting.
- Develop mental arithmetic skills with integers.
- Strengthen problem-solving abilities through strategic gameplay.
How the Activity Works:
Students take turns spinning the built-in spinner on the game board and rolling a six-sided die. The spinner contains expressions with a missing number (e.g. 4 + - {dice}). Players substitute the number rolled into the expression, solve it, and move their counter forward or backward along the track based on the answer. If the result is positive, they move forward; if negative, they move backward. The first player to reach the mountain summit wins!
