Probability Challenge

EASYTEACHING.NET

Overview:

A design challenge that encourages students to apply their knowledge of probability in a creative way. Designed for middle and upper years students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the concept of probability and equal likelihood of outcomes.
  • Apply probability concepts to design and modify objects.
  • Develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills through a hands-on activity.

How the Activity Works:

Students are introduced to the concept that when a 6-sided die is rolled, there are 6 possible outcomes, with each number having an equal chance of being rolled. The challenge asks them to design a 6-sided die that increases the probability of landing on the number 3. They will need to think about how to modify the die (e.g., altering the weight distribution, size, or shape of the faces) to achieve this higher probability. Students present their designs, explaining the changes made to increase the likelihood of rolling a 3. This practical challenge helps students engage with probability in a real-world context and encourages creative thinking.
